New Worlds, New Steps

37th Annual Summer School, Hengrave Hall, 30th July - 6th August 2004

With the French Revolution came a new spirit of democracy and bourgeois leadership, in reaction to the old aristocratic order. This led to a lively scene of convivial social dancing, reflecting the new world in its steps and groupings. New dances crossed national boundaries in Europe, and the latest fashions spread to the New World, where they were quickly adapted to American society. This exciting age was the subject of the 2004 Summer School, which presented dances from France, England and many other European nations, as well as America. Through the cotillons, country dances, reels, quadrilles, waltzes, polkas, mazurkas, and many more, the polite worlds of the ballroom, drawing room and assembly came alive, contrasting with the local world of town inn, farmer's barn or village green.

There are a few pictures in the gallery.
