Most DHDS dance books and recordings are produced for the society's annual summer schools. The books are based on research by the teachers and usually contain background information, step descriptions, dance instructions and music. The accompanying CD normally contains recordings of music for all the dances in the book, researched, arranged and recorded specially for dance practice. In addition to these, a project is underway over the next few years (starting in 2003) to develop a series of CDs covering the main periods of interest recorded to a high professional standard. These will contain a balance of dances suitable for beginners and improving dancers. Two of these are now available: Ballare et Danzare and Dances of Court and Country
Samples from some of
the recordings are provided, shown by the gramophone icon. They are typically 1
minute long, are in MP3 format and heavily compressed to reduce download times;
each file is around 250 Kbyte.
Newer samples are
30 seconds long in high quality MP3s, typically about 500 KByte.

Jane Austen's brother Henry recorded that 'Jane was fond of dancing, and excelled in it'. The ballroom and assembly scenes in her novels were based on first-hand experience, but she rarely specified the dances.
