Instructions for Authors

Please submit 3 copies of articles for consideration by the editor and referees. They should be typed on one side of A4 paper, in double spacing with ample margins. The pages should be consecutively numbered throughout. Articles should be sent to the editor at the above address

Please supply brief notes about yourself (a couple of sentences) suitable for inclusion in the Notes on Contributors section.

Sections and sub-sections should be clearly differentiated and titled, but not numbered.

Diagrams, photographs and reproductions of original material should be used wherever they improve exposition. They should accompany the script on separate sheets and take account of the page size and layout of Historical Dance. Wherever possible, diagrams should be drawn in black ink or printed on a laser printer for direct reproduction. Do not use colour. Please provide a separate list of captions.

Any books or articles cited should be listed in a References section at the end of the article. The form of citations should follow the numeric (i.e. endnote) system from British Standard BS 5605:1978, extended as shown in the examples to include fuller imprint information. When citing modern facsimiles or editions of documents please give full imprint information about the modern version and as much information as possible about the original.

Abbreviations should be avoided, especially in references; in particular, journal titles should be quoted in full.

Footnotes, endnotes (other than references) and appendices should be avoided.

The copyright of Historical Dance is held by DHDS. Authors will usually be asked to complete a transfer of copyright agreement before a manuscript is published, but this may be waived in certain circumstances. Transferring copyright enables the Society to ensure the widest possible dissemination of the articles. Permission to use the material in subsequent publications will normally be granted on request. If material has been published elsewhere, authors must obtain the consent of the original publisher.

These notes are provided for guidance, and may be varied if necessary. If in doubt, please contact the editor.

Examples of references

Number references or endnotes in the order they occur in the text using either a superscript or a number in square brackets.

In the references section list the references in numerical order as in the examples below, which show a journal paper [1], a conference paper/section of book [2], and a whole book.[3]

Submissions on disc

Electronic submission of articles is the preferred option for the final version, after acceptance by the Journal, on disc. The editor will be happy to advise on submissions in this form. Most of the major PC formats can be handled easily, as can the Apple Macintosh version of Microsoft Word. Other formats may have to be exported as or converted to ASCII text, and may lose formatting or special characters in the process. Please consult the editor about suitable formats for diagrams, music notation and illustrations.

Please note that elaborate formatting and special features such as tables will have to be removed and laid out again for publication, so unnecessary formatting should be avoided. In particular, do not indent references; just use simple paragraphs as above, with a single tab after the number.
