First Announcement and Call for Papers
Conference and Workshops
All Saints Pastoral Centre, London Colney (near St Albans)
Saturday and Sunday, 28 and 29 March 2009
Many of the choreographies recorded between the 1400s and the 1800s were dances of display, intended for performance by royal, noble and other less exalted amateurs before an audience. They were not theatrical dances - or were they? DHDS invites proposals from researchers and practitioners which investigate dances of display. Aspects to be addressed might include: surviving choreographies; choreographers and performers; performance styles and techniques at court, in the ballroom and elsewhere; the use and significance of improvisation; the purpose for which the choreographies were created; the context within which the dances were performed; audiences and the reception of these dances; the sources which record the choreographies.
Papers, demonstrations and workshops on any aspect of dances of display are warmly invited.
Four copies of abstracts of papers and proposals for demonstrations or workshops should be sent to arrive no later than 29 August 2008 at the following address:
Moira Goff, 57A Ridgeway, Berkhamsted, Herts HP4 3LD
email:
Abstracts and proposals should be limited to a single sheet of A4 or US letter paper.
Spoken papers should be of 25 minutes (maximum), unless specially negotiated otherwise. Workshops may, if necessary, take up to 55 minutes; the proposal should state how long will be required, with reasons.
